The Festival dates back to those days when the Returnee Slaves that had Brazilian Origin gained the attention and recognition of their Lagos indigenes with their culture.
It was called the Carretta Festival because there was the use of Masks and Masquerades which in Brazil was called Carretta.
They wore very flashy dresses but when the Togolese and Beninoise joined the train,they introduced the use of Ankara which has now given the event a unique identity.
The season is marked by increased prosperity in the city as there is a lot of buying and selling and indeed a general season of goodwill.
